71-Year Old Dr. Killed in Single-Car Crash in Tammany Parish

Some people tend to think that single car accidents aren’t very dangerous. Usually, they involve someone who hops a curb or hits a deer. It’s the scary, multi-vehicle crashes most people. However, single car accidents can be just as serious as any other crash. This proved to be the case for a 71-year old doctor in Tammany Parish this past weekend.

Doctor Beverly E. Chaignaud, of Lacombe, was driving her Toyota Camry Westbound on Interestate-12 on Friday. She was in the right lane. For some reason, she lost control of her vehicle and it went off the right side of the road and landed on the shoulder.

The Camry ended up going back onto the highway and swerving into the right lane. It was here that the victim’s car was hit by a Freightliner tractor trailer. The truck was going Westbound as well.

The impact was very severe and Doctor Chaignaud sustained very serious injuries. She didn’t survive and was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the tractor trailer also suffered minor injuries and was taken to the local hospital.

The investigation is still ongoing. The authorities aren’t sure what caused her to lose control of her vehicle in the first place. They have not indicated that impairment played any role in the crash.

The victim was a doctor at UAB. The crash happened at about 8:30 pm on the Interstate near Highway 11. No other cars were involved in the crash aside from the tractor trailer and the Toyota Camry.

There has been no statement made by the victim’s family. Depending on what caused the crash, they may have a potential legal claim.
