3 Children, 3 Adults Injured In 4-Vehicle Accident

A four-vehicle accident near Bush, Louisiana, on July 13 sent three children and three adults to area hospitals. The multi-car accident occurred about 3 p.m., close to the intersection of Hwy 21 and Hwy 40. One of the vehicles involved was a semi-truck and trailer.

A spokesperson with the Louisiana Highway Patrol said the semi-truck was driven by a 61-year-old man from Meraux. He was on Hwy 21 when he came upon three vehicles that were stopped in the road. Those vehicles were waiting for another vehicle to complete a turn. The semi-truck did not stop in time to avoid a collision. The initial collision between the semi and a Nissan SUV set off a chain reaction that sent the Nissan into a Honda SUV, and then the Honda SUV struck a Hyundai SUV.

The Nissan had three children in the backseat and all three were either wearing seat belts or in car seats. A 19-month-old and a 2-year-old were seriously injured. They were transported to University Hospital. The other child, an 8-year-old, suffered minor injuries and was also transported to a hospital nearby.

The driver and the passenger of the Nissan, ages 26 and 27, suffered minor injuries, as did the 36-year-old driver of the Honda. The Honda driver was transported to LSU medical center. The 32-year-old driver of the Hyundai was not injured. All were wearing their seat belts, according to state police.

According to police reports, the driver of the semi was not under the influence of alcohol when the accident occurred. He was given citations for careless operation of a motor vehicle and expired license plates.

The injured parties could pursue civil actions against the driver of the semi and, if applicable, the company that owns the truck. The civil suits could include claims for medical expenses, pain and suffering, emotional distress, lost wages and other damages.
