Truck hits 3 pedestrians in Louisiana; 2 teenagers killed

Two teenagers died on Oct. 30 after a speeding driver struck them in St. Martin Parish. According to a Louisiana State Police, the fatal crash occurred around 7:30 a.m. on Martin Street.

Officers say that a 32-year-old man in a 2007 Ford F-150 was traveling eastbound when he lost control of his pickup and hit three teenagers. Police claim that the man was traveling twice as fast than the posted 25 mph sign when the crash happened. After initially running off the road and entering a ditch, the truck hit a culvert and utility pole. The pickup then went into the intersection, re-entered the ditch and hit a second culvert.

A female teenager died at the scene, and another female minor died before making it to St. Martin Hospital in Breaux Bridge. A third teenager was taken to Our Lady of the Lake Hospital in Baton Rouge by helicopter after suffering serious injuries, but she is in stable condition as of Nov. 1.

The Ford driver is expected to be booked at the St. Martin Parish Jail after being released from the hospital. He faces numerous charges, which include two counts of vehicular homicide, reckless operation, one count of first-degree vehicle negligent injuring, felony hit-and-run, no insurance and resisting an officer with force or violence.

When a person is killed by a negligent driver, family members might consider filing a wrongful death claim in civil court. This allows a family to seek restitution for funeral costs as well as noneconomic damages. If a responsible driver does not have insurance, an attorney could possibly advise a family about alternative methods for receiving compensation.
