1 dead in multi-vehicle crash on Louisiana freeway

A 56-year-old New Orleans man was killed in a three-vehicle accident on Interstate 10 in St. James Parish on Sept. 6. Of the two other drivers involved, one was injured with reportedly moderate to serious injuries. Authorities could not immediately determine whether driver impairment may have been a factor. A toxicology sample was taken from the deceased driver for analysis by the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab.

According to the Louisiana State Police, the accident occurred just after 1:30 a.m. near Highway 641. They report that an eastbound Nissan Altima left the road, struck the median and ended up in westbound traffic where it was propelled into the pathway of a box truck after hitting a Jetta.

The Altima driver died in the crash. The driver of the Jetta, a 26-year-old man from Indiana, was taken to Interim LSU Hospital in New Orleans for treatment of his injuries. All three drivers were reported to have been wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.

Authorities expressed their desire to warn the public of the dangers of driving while impaired, which they say continues to be a significant problem in Louisiana. Troopers affirmed their commitment to an impaired driver public education campaign and to enforcing Louisiana's DWI laws. They encouraged the designation of an unimpaired driver to help prevent drunk driving.

The aftermath of an interstate car accident can impact all areas of an injured survivor's life, including their economic stability. In Louisiana, accident victims might be able to pursue the liable party for compensation of their losses. When efforts to settle a loss claim with the responsible party or their insurance company fail, accident survivors may be able to recover the resources needed to get their life back on track in a civil personal injury claim.
