Woman dies when towed vehicle breaks loose, causes crash

A 24-year-old Texas woman has died in an auto accident just east of Breaux Bridge, Louisiana. The accident occurred on Interstate 10 when a towed vehicle broke free and crashed into another car.

The towed vehicle, a Jeep Liberty, was not occupied. It was being towed behind a Chevy pickup truck. The Louisiana State Police are investigating the accident, but are not sure why the vehicle broke loose. When it did, the Jeep crossed over the median on the interstate and crashed into a 2008 Nissan.

Police report the woman, who was not the driver of the Nissan, was not wearing a seat belt. There were two other people in the car and both suffered moderate injuries. Police said both of the other people were wearing their seat belts at the time of the accident.

There is no word yet on whether the driver of the Chevy truck will face charges in this accident.

Even if there are no criminal charges filed, the family of the woman who died may have a wrongful death claim against the woman driving the Chevy truck. In addition, there may be possible claims against the owner of the truck, if it is not the same person. The driver of the Nissan could also be held liable for the woman's death.

The woman's family should consult with a Louisiana wrongful death attorney. This is the best way to learn about their options in the case, including the possible claims for wrongful death, loss of consort, funeral expenses and other damages. There are time limits in place that dictate how long the family has to file such a civil action and the attorney would also be able to advise the family on how best to proceed. Wrongful death lawsuits are meant to hold those accountable for their negligence or recklessness that results in the loss of a loved one.
