NHTSA advocates for black boxes in all cars

The term "black box" usually calls to mind images of airplanes and aviation accidents. For years these valuable tools have been storing information that can be used to reconstruct critical details of plane crashes, helping experts and policymakers make flying safer for everyone.

However, their utility may soon take to the road. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration would like to issue a mandate that all auto manufacturers include black boxes in their cars.

Some automakers already do - for example, General Motors began installing them in some models in 1999. An industry-wide requirement would ensure that everyone who buys a car has access to the benefits of black box technology.

As a federal agency, NHTSA has the authority to sidestep Congressional approval by making its own rules. They will likely take that route, as Congress rejected a proposal to require event data recorders in cars in 2010.

Black boxes in cars could make it easier for victims of motor vehicle accidents to seek appropriate damages for their injury, property damage or wrongful death claims. If black box data can shed additional light on what happened during an accident - and who was at fault - it may be easier for courts to award fair and accurate compensation.

In addition to the physical pain that comes with an auto accident, it can take a toll on your family, your finances and other aspects of your everyday life. If you are injured because of another driver's recklessness, negligence or intoxication, it is wise to work with an experienced personal injury attorney who can help you pursue any damages to which you may be entitled.
