2012 shipping safety report brings mixed news for industry

Today marks the one-year anniversary of the Costa Concordia cruise ship disaster, which claimed the lives of 32 people. The disaster cast a spotlight on maritime safety, particularly for cruise ships, and the issue of ship losses.

The marina insurer Allianz Global Corporate & Specialty recently released its annual Shipping & Safety review, which acts as a comprehensive report on ship losses for the 12 months ending in Nov. 2012. The report also touches on developments in shipping safety.

In addition to the Costa Concordia disaster, 2012 saw 105 other ship losses. This is an increase from 2011, in which 91 ships were lost. However, despite the increase 2012 fits into a longer-term trend of falling losses and improved safety in shipping.

2012 saw improvements in safety thanks to improved technology, increased efforts in safety training and stronger regulations that keep maritime workers, passengers and other parties safe.

However, even one preventable fatality at sea is too many. The Allianz report noted that human error was the cause of most ship losses and resulting injuries or deaths. Fortunately, new regulations have been enacted to try to address that issue.

Maritime injury claims are unique because there are many different state and federal laws that govern liability for accidents and what damages may be available to victims. If you or someone you love have been injured in an accident at sea or in the course of maritime employment, it is important to work with someone who can help. Consider speaking with a personal injury attorney experienced
