Smartphone apps may help curb distracted driving

In cases involving distracted driving, smartphones are usually the subjects of ire and blame. With greater capabilities than ever before, these gadgets may tempt motorists, especially young ones, to talk, text or engage in other distractions while driving.

However, some developers are taking steps to turn these phones into tools that can help stop distracted driving rather than encourage it. Several apps have been developed to help parents prevent their teens from texting while driving.

One Android app called DriveOff is available for free and uses sensors to determine when a car is traveling more than 10 mph. When the vehicle reaches that speed, the app disables other apps that could be distracted and temporarily stops incoming calls and text messages.

Another Android app, DriveMode, launches when a car reaches 25 mph. This one actually responds to incoming calls and texts, letting the caller or texter know that the phone's owner is driving and cannot respond. It also turns off all notifications that alert the driver of incoming texts or emails and diverts calls to voicemail.

MobiLoc is a similar app for iPhone that stops incoming calls and texts while the phone is moving. Once the iPhone stops, normal operation of the phone can be resumed.

If you or someone you love have been hurt in an accident caused by a distracted or otherwise negligent driver, consider speaking with a personal injury attorney. They can help you pursue any appropriate claims for damages - including medical bills, lost wages or pain and suffering - and get your life back on track while you focus on your recovery.
