Semitrailer crash leaves motorcyclist dead in Louisiana

East of Lake Charles, near Lafayette, the Louisiana State Police are investigating an accident that claimed the life of a motorcyclist. The 64-year-old accident victim seems to have been sitting in traffic on Interstate 10 near the Whiskey Bay Bridge at approximately 5:00 p.m. when an 18-wheeler drove right into him, killing him instantly.

Although the driver has been arrested and will face criminal charges for negligent homicide and reckless operation, the motorcyclist's family will not get the compensation that they deserve from a criminal conviction. Whether the man's family members are no longer able to depend on his wages for financial support or heartbroken over the loss of his companionship, they should be able to force the trucker to pay damages. Families who have lost loved ones in fatal accidents can also seek damages for simple emotional pain and suffering after a crash.

The motorcyclist was stopped because traffic had come to a standstill as Louisiana State Troopers of Troop I attempted to capture a dog that had gotten loose in the westbound lanes. Instead of slowing and stopping like everyone else, the trucker quickly swerved into the space between the east- and westbound lanes. Unfortunately, he was unable to completely clear the stopped traffic and smashed into the back of the motorcyclist and three other vehicles.

Because truckers are professional drivers, Louisiana residents should be able to expect them to operate their vehicles with the utmost caution and care. Especially because semitrailers and 18-wheelers are so large and dangerous, it is imperative that the drivers pay close attention to the road and traffic conditions. When a driver is negligent or is distracted from driving, however, he or she should be held responsible for the damage he or she causes.
