Final 9/11 wrongful death lawsuit settled

The final 9/11 wrongful death lawsuit was settled last month. The family of a professional hockey scout decided to settle the wrongful death lawsuit stemming from the events of 9/11 after they made public as much information as they could about what they viewed as security lapses and mistakes committed by security staff at Logan Airport in Boston.

The 31-year-old man who was the subject of the wrongful death suit worked as a hockey scout in Massachusetts for the Los Angeles Kings hockey team. He was onboard Flight 175 when it took off from Boston's Logan Airport, was hijacked by terrorists and flown in the south tower of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2011. The wrongful death lawsuit was filed by the man's mother and the terms of the recent settlement have not been disclosed.

The 31-year-old's family blamed the airline United and the security company Huntleigh for security failures that led to the terrorists' ability to hijack the plane and their son's death. The lawsuit alleged that the companies failed to hire qualified screeners and failed to properly train the screeners on the threat of terrorism. The family argued that at least nine screeners were not aware of the threat level on the morning of the attacks and at least nine screeners had never heard of Osama bin Laden or al-Qaida nor had the security company's director of training and general manager at Logan.

The family of the 31-year-old had made it their goal to demonstrate the lack of security on the day of the infamous flight and to get that information into public record. Having achieved that goal family members said it gave them some relief.
