Federal Officials Will Visit Louisiana Oil Spill Zone Friday

Federal officials will visit the oil spill zone in Louisiana Friday to help coordinate the response to the environmental crises, including top officials from the Homeland Security Department, Environmental Protection Agency, and the Interior Department. U.S. Homeland Security secretary Janet Napolitano has declared that the oil spill is of "national significance," meaning that the federal government will be able to devote more resources to the response and clean-up. 

Environmental, Fishing Industry Disaster Feared on LA Coastline

State and federal government officials, officials with oil giant BP, state biologists, and fishermen are frantically working to try to hold back a massive oil spill that continues to encroach on Louisiana's coastline. The oil has been gushing from a well 5,000 feet below the Gulf of Mexico's surface since  the Deepwater Horizon rig exploded on April 20. Oil is spilling out at a rate of 210,000 gallons per day, an estimate five times greater than originally reported. Commercial fishers have been helping to set oil booms along the coastline to try to contain the spreading oil and protect their livelihoods. 

Wal-Mart to implement cadmium testing standards for kids' products.

The AP (4/26) reported that Wal-Mart "revealed Monday that it has started to crack down on the use of the toxic metal cadmium in children's jewelry and other kids' products." Wal-Mart's "new testing regimen follows cadmium standards set by the European Union, according to Peggy Fowler, the chain's senior director of product safety and regulatory compliance."

Transocean Horizon Oil Rig Accident & Explosion

The Deepwater Horizion, is a massive oil rig owned by Transocean, Ltd., but leased to British Petroleum  since 2007.  On April 20, 2010, at approximately 10 p.m. while the rig performed drilling operations approximatley 50 miles southeast of Venice, Lousiana, an explosion and raging fire occurred causing crewmembers to be thrown overboard injuring at least 17 and killing appoximately 11 others aboard the vessel.
