Three Teenagers Injured in 'Texting While Driving' Car Accident

The dangers of texting-while-driving are well established by now. Louisiana recently strengthened its relevant law to make texting behind the wheel a primary offense, meaning that individuals can be stopped for that conduct alone. In the past, police could only cite individuals for texting while driving if they had already been pulled over for some other reason.

Now, a recent car accident, which seriously injured three young men, serves as a reminder of just how dangerous texting can be. Just last Saturday, three Hahnville High School students were struck by a car while they stood near the side of a road in St. Charles Parish. Reports indicated that the driver of the car was both speeding and texting when she lost control of her vehicle and hit the three young men.

According to one of the men's father, several other students witnessed the accident and helped lift the car off two of the victims that had been trapped under the car. All three men were transported to hospitals to treat their varying degree of injuries.

At last reporting, all three students were still hospitalized. One of them suffered a deep cut in his leg, another suffered a broken hip, and the most seriously injured man suffered undisclosed head injuries.

The driver of the car has been arrested and was booked with texting while operating a motor vehicle, reckless driving, and three separate counts of negligent injuring. As of the beginning of this week, she was still be held in the St. Charles Parish jail with a bond set at $315,000.
